Pain Treatments

Treating pain is a very individualized process. The type of pain treatment a patient receives depends on many factors, including the cause, severity, and location of pain. At the Center for Pain Control in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, an individualized treatment plan may include one or more of the follow pain management treatments:

Nerve Blocks with X-Ray Guidance

Your doctor will use a live X-ray image (fluoroscopy) to carefully insert and guide a needle to the affected joint. A contrast dye is used to confirm the needle placement.  Next, the medication solution is delivered to the joint, and the needle is removed. Although nerve blocks do not provide permanent pain relief, it can treat the source of pain and inflammation for long periods of time.

The Board-Certified Pain Management Doctors at the Center for Pain Control provide the following types of nerve blocks:

  • Facet Block
  • Ganglion Block
  • Medial Nerve Block
  • Sympathetic Nerve Block

Medication Injections

Medication injections are a non-surgical treatment option for joint, muscle, and radiating pain. The procedure involves delivering pain medications directly to or near the source of the pain during a very short outpatient procedure. Medication injections can be a very effective form of pain relief for some people and may be repeated over time. For some, physical therapy rehabilitation is possible once the pain has been relieved.

The following types of medication injections are administered at the Center for Pain Control:

Acupuncture

During acupuncture treatment, very fine sterile disposable needles are inserted into specific points on the body to help restore harmony and the free flow of energy (Qi). Acupuncture is a holistic therapy addressing the mind and spirit, as well as the body to encourage natural healing, including acute and chronic pain relief. The needles may be warmed, twirled, or stimulated to enhance the treatment benefits.

Implantable Infusion Pumps

In cases of severe pain, medications taken by mouth may not be enough for adequate pain relief. Implantable infusion pumps allow pain medication to be delivered to the source of pain around the spinal cord. Morphine, Baclofen, local anesthetics, Clonidine are types of medicines that are administered by a pump that is surgically placed in the abdomen and sends pain medication through a tube to the area surrounding the spinal cord. The pain medication is refilled by injecting the medication through the skin into the pump's tank.

Implantable Spinal Cord Stimulators

Implantable spinal cord stimulators use a low current of electricity to provide pain relief for back pain and radiculopathy, such as sciatica. The low electrical currents block the sensation of pain. Spinal cord stimulators may be fully implanted or partially implanted with an external power source.

Physical & Occupational Therapy

Physical therapists and occupational therapists teach patients exercises for strengthening, stretching, and overall conditioning that can help keep the back strong, improve posture, and ease pain. Exercise may be combined with therapeutic modalities, such as hot and cold therapies, ultrasound, iontophoresis, and TENS units, to relieve pain.

Psychological Intervention

Psychological factors, such as behaviors, beliefs, and the ability to cope with pain can have a strong influence on depression, health-related quality of life, and disability due to pain. The Center for Pain Control offers psychological intervention to promote positive coping skills for patients with pain. Our techniques include biofeedback and relaxation training, as well as individual and group therapy.

Radiofrequency Neurotomy

Radiofrequency neurotomy uses heat to treat nerve pain by creating a lesion on the nerve. The lesion impairs the nerve's ability to transmit signals about pain. Radiofrequency neurotomy provides pain relief for about a year, but can last much longer for some people. Learn more about radiofrequency neurotomy!
